November 2022
Dear Audubon Families,
During the month of October students, staff, and families settled into the routines of school. Members of our school community observed many fall holidays such as Yom Kippur, Indigenous People's Day, Diwali, Halloween, Dia de los Muertos and more. Our site-based equity team continues to discuss ways to incorporate student and family voice at school and learning about different holidays is one way to learn more about our neighbors and classmates. Speaking of our equity team, we are looking for parents or community members to join us. We meet in the mornings twice a month from 7:45-8:30 to collaborate on the improvement of teaching and learning in our school. If you are interested in becoming a team member please reach out to mames@lwsd.org
Our fabulous PTSA ran a successful jog-a-thon fundraiser and had a great turnout of students, families, and pets! Thank you to those who participated, and make sure to sign up for the PTSA newsletter to keep up to date on future fun activities.
Also in October the Green Team partnered with The King County Green Schools Program (KCGSP) to bring to Audubon our first in person assembly. Students heard from Curiosity Quest about reducing, reusing, recycling, and other ways to help the environment. Our school is continuing to look for ways to be more sustainable and commit to helping planet Earth.
Please read below for more information about events coming up in November and as always, thank you for your partnership.

December 2022
Dear Audubon Families,
November was a month full of gratitude. Students learned through our social-emotional curriculum Purposefull People that recognizing what you are grateful is a practice that supports overall wellbeing. We discovered that there is a lot to be grateful for both in and outside of school including a successful trip to 5th grade camp, the establishment of many classroom big buddy/little buddy activities, and more.
Although we have just a few short weeks of school in December we have much to look forward to. First up is Computer Science Education Week. Our fantastic PTSA has put together a sign up to ensure each classroom has an opportunity to participate in a fun coding activity. Teachers have identified their specific Hour of Code time slots and if you'd like to come support this project feel free to sign up via Audubon's PTSA website. We are thrilled to welcome parent volunteers to the classrooms to explore Bee-Bots, Minecraft Education, coding, and more!
As seen today, the weather is turning quickly from fall to winter. The students had an amazing time enjoying the snow for recess so far. As a reminder, if there is any change in school schedule including early dismissal, late start, cancellation, or bus route change, that information will be posted on the Lake Washington School District website (Lake Washington School District (lwsd.org) ) and be sent via ParentSquare. More specific information about how closure decisions are made can be found here: https://www.lwsd.org/schools/school-closures-and-late-starts.
Many of our families are traveling over the next month as well and we wish you safe travels. Remember to let your child's teacher and the front office (AudubonES@lwsd.org) know of any absences. Whether you are celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, New Year's, or all or none of the above, may you have a joyous holiday season.
Warmly,
Megan Ames and Mariel Zink

Happy New Year!
As we welcomed back students from winter break we were re-energized and began getting ready for the busy months ahead. Students and staff have been focusing on schoolwide expectations and routines these past few weeks and revisiting the owl way: be respectful, be responsible, be safe, and do my best. Our counselor Mrs. Peckham has been visiting classrooms to model community building circles, and teachers have been busy collecting evidence of student work to prepare for report cards and conferences. The character trait of the month is perseverance and students are also learning what this means and how they can persevere through difficult tasks.
We need your help: our school safety committee meets monthly to plan for and practice emergency procedures. An important part of preparedness is ensuring each student has an emergency contact listed in their Skyward profile and that all phone numbers are current. We notice that some profiles haven't been updated in a while or are missing this important information. Please log on to your family access account and update your information. Thank you for helping us be prepared.
